Assistant Professor of English (20th and 21st Century American Literature)

The English department at Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in 20th and 21st Century American Literature, to begin July 1, 2021. Scholars with research and teaching interests in Latinx Literature are particularly welcome, as are candidates who can broaden the English department’s curricular diversity in critical race, gender and sexuality, or disability studies, as well as environmental or digital humanities. Contributions to one or more of Kenyon’s interdisciplinary programs, including African Diaspora Studies, Comparative World Literature, Environmental Studies, Latino/a Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies are also desirable. The teaching requirement will be five courses per year (divided 3:2 or 2:3) and will include courses at all levels of the curriculum. Additional responsibilities will include contributions to the life of the English department and the College (including advising students, directing honors projects, and participating in faculty governance). Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level is required. Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. by August 2021. A completed application must include 1) a cover letter detailing research interests, teaching experience, and teaching philosophy with information on ways that issues and practices related to diversity, inclusion, and equity have been or will be included in teaching and advising; 2) a Curriculum Vitae; 3) an unofficial transcript. Applicants should also submit the names and email addresses of at least three references, including at least one who can attest to the applicant’s teaching effectiveness and potential. These references may be prompted by email to upload their letters of recommendation to the application website at a later stage. All application materials must be submitted electronically through Kenyon’s website at http://careers.kenyon.edu. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled; to ensure full consideration, candidates should submit preliminary materials by January 15. Applications will be acknowledged by automatic response. Semi-finalists will be asked to submit writing samples prior to preliminary interviews, which will be held by Zoom or Google Meet. Virtual final round interviews will follow. An Equal Opportunity Employer, Kenyon encourages diversity and welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.
