The Modern Languages program seeks an engaging and energetic teacher who can offer introductory and advanced courses for both majors and non-majors. The successful candidate would be comfortable teaching all levels of Spanish, including but not limited to beginning, intermediate and advanced language courses, civilization, culture, and phonetics. We are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrable dedication to study abroad and undergraduate education with an appreciation of the mission of a mid-size regional comprehensive university.

 

The ideal candidate for this position would excel in teaching both elementary Spanish and curriculum development of advanced courses. The program currently has a thriving Spanish minor with the goal of attracting and retaining students to the major through innovative curricular design, recruitment, and marketing to a wider range of interdisciplinary or double major degrees. The program also has a strong commitment to study abroad experience and would like the candidate to develop a short term (2 weeks) study abroad program.   

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach 12 undergraduate hours a semester, primarily face-to-face with some online
  • Actively recruit and advise students to support retention and completion efforts including involvement in student organizations
  • Maintain a schedule of office hours
  • Attend department meetings and engage in service as needed
  • Maintain an active research program

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or ABD (with Ph.D. by August 2021) in Spanish (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified University.)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching face-to-face classes at college/university level as graduate assistant, instructor, or above
  • Training and experience in any supplementary area(s), including but not limited to:
    • Spanish for a Purpose
    • Spanish for the Professions
    • Linguistics
    • Translation Theory
    • Interpretation
  • Demonstrated interest in developing or participating in short term study abroad programs
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to learn to teach online courses
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and the mission of a regional comprehensive university
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
