Assistant Professor of Spanish

The Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Spanish to join the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies beginning August 2021.

The successful candidate will have near-native proficiency in Spanish and English and hold a Ph.D. in Spanish or a closely related field. Teaching excellence at all undergraduate levels of Spanish, a commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogy, and knowledge of current best practices in teaching methodologies for face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities are requirements for the position. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching and developing curricula in Spanish for Health Professions, but additional areas of expertise will be considered, including Spanish for the Professions, Spanish for Business, and Spanish for Heritage Speakers. Willingness to foster outreach and community engagement is required, as is an active research agenda, and the ability to engage collaboratively with colleagues and students in a multi-language department. Advanced assistant professors are encouraged to apply. The LIS Department offers a major in Languages and Intercultural Studies with concentrations in Hispanic Studies and Multiple Languages, as well as minors in Spanish and Spanish for Health Professions, and has plans to develop a graduate certificate in Spanish for Health Professions. The new colleague will work collaboratively across departments to develop curricular offerings relevant to students for whom linguistic and cultural competence is a critical component of their academic and professional training.

The LIS Department aspires to create a diverse and inclusive community of scholars that cultivates curiosity, inspires creativity, fosters interdisciplinary understanding, and encourages innovation. The typical course load in the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts is 21 credit hours per academic year or the equivalent, with due consideration and adjustment made for the demands of individualized instruction, independent study, experiential learning, and other high-impact teaching practices. The university offers support for professional development and scholarly activity both on and off campus, and values community engagement as an element of the faculty role.
