Assistant Professor of African-American Literature and Cultures

The Department of English at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (African-American Literature) position, to begin August 16, 2020.

We are seeking an outstanding teacher-scholar in African-American Literatures and Cultures with college-level teaching experience that evidences innovative and active learning approaches and demonstrates a commitment to diversity, student learning, and inclusive pedagogy. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in English or a foreign equivalent degree by the date of appointment and have a research agenda and publication record that reflect a commitment to developing innovative scholarship in their discipline. Preferred secondary specialties include Literatures of the Americas, Literature of the African Diaspora, and/or Southern Literature. The ideal candidate will be open to collaboration within the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and across the university campus, and candidates that will contribute to the diversity of our faculty are especially encouraged to apply.

The individual hired for this position will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate literature and composition courses, courses in the African Diaspora Studies minor, and graduate courses in the Master of Arts in writing program. The new hire may also contribute to the initiatives of Coastal Carolina University’s Athenaeum Press (a student-driven publishing lab, https://www.coastal.edu/athenaeumpress/) and the Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies (the only institute in the nation that focuses on Gullah Geechee culture and preservation, https://www.coastal.edu/joynerinstitute/). These initiatives include working on multiple federal grant projects on African American archives, interpretation, and architectural preservation.

The Department of English (https://www.coastal.edu/english/) aspires to create a diverse and inclusive community of scholars that promote reading and writing critically through an open exchange of ideas so that our students can better understand—and write perceptively on—the historical, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions of language and literature. Furthermore, we are committed to innovative teaching and strongly encourage the development of experiential and multimodal learning. The department offers two majors: the B.A. in English and the B.A. in Digital Culture and Design. We also offer six minors and house the M.A. in Writing program, which prepares students for careers in writing, editing, and publishing or for further graduate study in M.F.A. or Ph.D. programs. The typical teaching load is 4/3 (12 semester hours/9 semester hours).
