Professor and Head of School, School of Languages and Cultures

The School of Languages and Cultures has grown rapidly in recent years and now has over 1000 equivalent full-time students (over 8,000 course enrolments). It is one of the largest schools of language instruction in Australia with 46 fixed-term and continuing academic staff

The School of Languages and Cultures teaches Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish, as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, to students in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, and the University-wide concurrent Diploma in Languages, the Diploma of Arts, and dual degree programs.

At postgraduate level, the School offers two NAATI-accredited Masters programs in Translation and Interpreting (one in Japanese and one in Chinese) and growing programs in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Staff research and supervise PhD students in these fields and also in Australian Aboriginal languages.

About This Opportunity

The Head of School is a key operational and strategic academic leadership role responsible for enacting the School, Faculty and UQ vision, cultivating collaborative and productive relationships and delivering outstanding results across the core activities of the School.

The Head of School generates and enacts the School’s vision and strategy; inspires and leads academic and professional staff; and effectively manages the School’s resources, governance frameworks and administrative processes.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Applicants will hold a PhD in a discipline relevant to Languages and Cultures. A full-time continuing appointment will be offered to the successful applicant along with a five-year fixed term appointment as Head of School, with a possible continuation by mutual agreement of the headship appointment for a further term. A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
