Revelle College, Director of Humanities Program- Assistant Teaching Professor (LPSOE)

University of California San Diego

Revelle College invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position to serve as the Director of the Revelle College Humanities Program (LPSOE). Assistant Teaching Professors have nine-month (academic-year) appointments and are full members of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of the University of California, San Diego.

Revelle College is the oldest of UC San Diego's seven colleges and is named for the founder of this campus, the distinguished scientist Roger Revelle. The Humanities Program forms a core part of the college's general education requirements, which are designed to introduce undergraduate students to a wide variety of subjects and methods—scientific, social scientific, and humanistic. The Humanities is an interdisciplinary program principally taught by faculty from the humanities and social sciences.

The program's basic offerings consist of five chronologically arranged courses on Western intellectual and cultural history, beginning with ancient Greece and Israel and ending with the current era. Students study primary texts—such as, Homer, Plato, the Bible, Virgil, Shakespeare, Locke, Rousseau, Mary Shelley, Marx, and Martin Luther King—both critically and in their historical contexts. The first two courses constitute the college's writing program, focused on the composition of formal, evidence-based, analytical arguments. Completion of these two courses fulfils the University of California's system-wide writing requirement. The program also provides a seminar for the graduate teaching assistants in the program and coordinates the campus-wide Humanities Minor.

We seek a Program Director who can be hired as an Assistant Teaching Professor. An Assistant Teaching Professor has the potential security of employment.

The director has many duties, including:

Providing administrative supervision of the sequence of the Humanities Program

Providing leadership for writing instruction across the program

Selecting, training, and mentoring teaching assistants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds

Teaching within the program, including large lecture courses and the graduate seminar that trains graduate students to serve as teaching assistants

Working with the provost, to whom the director reports, to integrate the program into the Revelle College experience

Recruiting departmental faculty to teach courses in the program during the academic year and in the summer

Ensuring the excellence, continuity, and intellectual accessibility of the courses in the program

Representing the program to the broader community (both within the university and more broadly)

Serving on college, academic senate, and university committees

Humanities is a very large program, with many faculty and teaching assistants and many hundreds of students enrolled. Although the director has some faculty and staff assistance, they must possess outstanding skills in organization, as well as the ability to work well with students and teachers of many backgrounds and personalities. An effective director will lead by inspiring understanding and trust among colleagues. The director must also be interested in the details of academic planning, with resources (of money, personnel, classroom space, etc.) that are necessarily limited, within a university that values the potential of creative solutions and new academic and programming possibilities.

The director must be an intellectually inspiring teacher with the ability to teach students to formulate theses, make sound arguments based on evidence, and write well. They must also be an excellent teacher and counselor of the graduate students who teach these skills to the college's students. The director must be able to teach successfully all five of the Program's courses: Ancient Israel and Ancient Greece; Rome, Early Christianity, and the Medieval World; The Renaissance; The Enlightenment and the Romantic Period; and The Modern World.
