Specialization: English Education; Rank: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track)

The Department of English and Comparative Literature at San Jose State University seeks an assistant professor with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in the field of English Education, experience with secondary level credential programs and familiarity with California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (or similar) guidelines, and an emerging record of peer-reviewed scholarship. The position requires a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in English, English Education, or a closely related field of study by start of appointment, August 13, 2020. Must have had teaching, research, curriculum design, and/or instructional coaching experience that gives applicant first-hand knowledge of, connection to, and expertise in grades 6-12 English classrooms. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preference given to applicants with the ability to teach university-level literature courses required of teacher prep students such as young adult literature, ethnic literature, world literature, or Transatlantic surveys, and who have training in a variety of pedagogical approaches, including digital humanities/pedagogies, and/or project-based learning. Successful applicants should possess one or more of the following: (1) research expertise and experience in multicultural education, including an intersectional approach to issues of race, sexism, gender, and sexuality; (2) experience teaching English at the middle or high school level in schools characterized by cultural and linguistic diversity; ( 3) experience with differentiation and use of a range of pedagogical strategies to support culturally, academically, and linguistically diverse student populations; and (4) experience mentoring and supervising student teachers.
