Assistant Professor of Rhetoric & Director of the Rhetoric Studio

Hampden-Sydney College invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2020 at the rank of Assistant Professor of Rhetoric & Director of the Rhetoric Studio, a state-of-the-art multimodal literacy center that opened in August 2019 as part of the College’s Pannill Center for Rhetoric and Communication.  Information about this exciting new feature of the Rhetoric Program is available on the Hampden-Sydney web page: http://www.hsc.edu/pannill-center/rhetoric-studio. Hampden-Sydney’s Rhetoric Program is praised and supported by the administration, faculty, and alumni as a central part of the curriculum; our Rhetoric Minor is the most popular minor that the College offers.

This nine-month faculty position involves a combination of administrative work and classroom teaching in first-year composition courses and upper-level courses in the Rhetoric minor.  Administrative duties will include but are not limited to training student consultants who staff the Studio, overseeing outreach efforts to faculty across the curriculum to promote the Studio’s opportunities and services, and facilitating workshops for faculty interested in incorporating assignments in various modalities. The successful candidate will oversee the Studio but will also work collaboratively with a team of faculty colleagues who serve as consultants and who assist in other aspects of the Studio’s operation.  Since the Studio—with its emphasis on providing support for multimodal communication projects in the disciplines—is a new feature of the Rhetoric Program, we are especially interested in candidates who can work well both with colleagues in Rhetoric and with faculty across multiple disciplines to make the Studio a centerpiece of the College’s liberal arts curriculum.

This administrative and consulting work in the Studio comprises a portion of the College’s regular teaching load; the successful candidate will also teach both 100-level composition courses in our general education rhetoric sequence (capped at 14 students) and upper-level courses in the minor. We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in hand by August 2020 in Rhetoric/Composition or a related field who have expertise in communication center administration, teaching experience in first-year composition, and teaching/research interests that will allow them to contribute to the course offerings in the Rhetoric minor.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and three confidential letters of reference via Interfolio.  Address letter to Professor Katherine Weese, Director of Rhetoric, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, VA 23943. Inquiries may be sent to kweese@hsc.edu. Application deadline is November 15, 2019.
