Full Time Lecturer in Technical & Professional Writing—Interdisciplinary Writing Program

The Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) in the Department of English at the University of Washington invites applications for the position of Full Time Lecturer, with an area of specialization in professional/technical writing. The IWP offers writing seminars linked with lecture courses in disciplines such as Psychology, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, Biology, History, Communications, Environmental Studies, and International Studies. Candidates will be expected to teach composition courses linked with lecture courses in disciplines such as business, engineering, or other STEM fields; stand-alone undergraduate composition courses in technical, professional writing and communication; and in other fields as needed. Other anticipated job responsibilities include contributing to program building, assessment, and administration; curriculum development in areas related to technical communication, multimodal writing, and/or service-learning; supporting international and multilingual students’ writing; collaboration with other department and campus writing partners; mentorship of graduate student instructors; and service on departmental/campus committees. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching and service.  A research agenda in areas related to technical/professional communication, Writing in the Disciplines, or writing studies is encouraged but not required. The successful candidate will promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. This position will have an anticipated start date of Autumn 2020, and is a full-time, 9-month, 3-year renewable (not tenure-eligible) position.

Qualifications

Applicants should have by the start of the appointment a PhD, or foreign equivalent, in English, communication, writing studies, or a related field, with an emphasis in technical/professional writing/communication. Demonstrated expertise in teaching technical/professional writing or industry experience as a technical communicator are also required. Successful candidates should demonstrate a record of innovative and effective teaching as well as student mentoring; a commitment to ongoing professional and scholarly development, broadly conceived; and active participation in departmental, university, and professional service.
