Introduction:

The Department of English Language and Literature at San Francisco State University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Nineteenth-Century American literature beginning in August, 2020. We seek a colleague who can bring a global perspective to the teaching of Nineteenth-Century American literature, and whose secondary fields include critical theory and/or queer literatures.

The Department of English Language and Literature serves a vibrant student population on a flagship CSU campus that reflects the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. The department is comprised of four undergraduate majors (English Education, Literature, Linguistics and Professional Writing and Rhetoric), four M.A. programs, three minors, and three graduate certificate programs. The position requires undergraduate and graduate (M.A. level) teaching in Nineteenth- Century American literature, mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students, developing ongoing scholarly projects in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:
•    Ph.D. in English or related field at the time of appointment
•    Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

Preferred:
•    Strong background in Nineteenth-Century American literature;
•    Demonstrated ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in related fields;
•    Research and/or teaching interests in critical theory, LGBTQ studies, or queer literatures.
•    Teaching and/or research experience with a large, diverse student body in multicultural setting are preferred
•    Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship;
•    Experience teaching in the areas of: Nineteenth-Century American literature; critical theory; queer literatures; American literature in global perspective;
•    Active record of scholarship engaging with Nineteenth-Century American literature.
•    Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching and/or scholarship.
•    Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under- represented communities.
•    Record of contributing to collegial, supportive, and collaborative work environments.

Rank and Salary:

Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
