Assistant Professor in Applied Language Studies and English Language Studies

The Department of Culture and Language Studies, Renison University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, invites applications for one tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. An appointment date of July 1, 2020 is preferred.

We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in applied linguistics or Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESL or TEFL). The successful candidate will demonstrate experience and excellence in teaching in these fields; have a track record of publication, and an established research program. Candidates with specializations in one or more of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: bilingual (multilingual/plurilingual/translingual) education in Canadian contexts, English for Academic or Special purposes, sociolinguistics, or digital literacies. Experience in curriculum and program development, as well as teaching experience in international and/or online settings are assets.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Director of English Language Studies. Renison University College, through its Department of Culture and Language Studies, offers both a minor in Applied Language Studies (APPLS, equivalent to applied linguistics), and English language credit courses for University of Waterloo students who speak a first language other than English. These courses are called English for Multilingual Speakers (EMLS) courses and are offered through the English Language Studies unit of the department. The successful candidate will teach a mix of APPLS and EMLS courses.  English Language Studies (ELS) supports the English language learning needs of the university’s English language learners by developing curricula informed by current research to optimize student outcomes in their disciplines. As a result, ELS works closely with other faculties to deliver courses that enhance students’ writing, speaking, listening, reading, and pronunciation skills at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Applied Language Studies (APPLS) program offers courses that explore issues related to additional and foreign language learning and teaching, including second language acquisition, teaching methodology and assessment, culture and identity. We strive to provide students with courses and experiences that enhance their understanding of the complex processes inherent in language education in a multilingual world. Students are often language learners themselves, pursuing majors in the university’s language departments; however, students from all faculties are represented in APPLS classrooms.

Respected as an inclusive community that values the diversity of its faculty, staff, and students, Renison is committed to engaged education for the well-being of the world, offering degree programs reflecting social engagement through the School of Social Work and the Social Development Studies Department; global engagement through the Culture and Language Studies Department; and community engagement in our non-degree programs through the Centre for Continuing and Professional Education.
