Assistant Professor of German

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Iowa State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of German to begin fall 2020. This generalist position will teach 4 language and culture courses each academic year at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum with an emphasis in 20th and 21st century German Studies, and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and student engagement.  The successful candidate will have an interest in teaching German Studies courses in English (e.g., German Fairy Tale) and developing online offerings and interdisciplinary courses in international studies, cross-cultural communication, or developing collaborations with Anthropology; the ability to participate actively in the undergraduate curriculum in the Languages and Cultures for Professions Program; and an interest in developing study abroad programs in Germany.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in German or a related discipline by time of appointment
  • Near-native proficiency in German and English
  • Record of excellence in teaching German

  • Demonstrated commitment to developing an active research agenda regarding 20thand 21stcentury German Studies
  • Ability to participate actively in the undergraduate curriculum in Languages and Cultures for Professions program
  • Interest in developing study abroad programs in Germany

  • Demonstrated commitment to academic service
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff
