Assistant Professor of Chinese (2 Positions)

The School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta invites applications for up to two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin on August 1, 2021. We are seeking specializations in a) Chinese culture & media studies and b) Chinese linguistics. The positions are full-time with an expected teaching load of two courses per semester (four per academic year).

An ideal candidate for the position oriented toward Chinese Culture & Media will bring expertise in film, digital media, and culture studies; inter- and cross-cultural studies, including Chinese-American studies; and content-based language pedagogy across the curriculum and for a spectrum of learners (beginner to advanced, heritage learners, and native speakers). Interest or expertise in one or more of the following areas is recommended: global Chinese media and social media cultures, digital humanities, multilingualism, translation and interpretation, and health, science, sustainability, and technology studies. The candidate will be eligible for consideration for a leadership opportunity to lead and develop graduate programming especially as part of the M.S. in Global Media & Cultures.

An ideal candidate for the position oriented toward Chinese Linguistics will bring expertise in applied Chinese linguistics, computational and cognitive linguistics, and holistic multi-variable Chinese language pedagogy, including for multilingual learners (beginning to advanced), heritage speakers, and native speakers. Interest or expertise in one or more of the following areas is recommended: cybersecurity, ethics, inter- and cross-cultural studies, science and technology studies, and translation and interpretation.  The candidate will be eligible for consideration for a leadership opportunity to lead and develop graduate programming especially as part of the M.S. in Applied Languages & Intercultural Studies and PhD minors bridging fields such as computing, cybersecurity, engineering, and psychology.

We seek candidates who bring an ambitious and entrepreneurial scholarly agenda and who have demonstrated experience with innovative curriculum development in applied and cross-cultural language studies, media studies, and linguistics. Interest or experience in teaching in an immersive faculty-led study-abroad program oriented toward business, technology, culture, and sustainability is highly recommended.

We seek colleagues with a commitment to collegiality, to the enhancement and expansion of the program as a whole and graduate studies in particular, and to extracurricular activities that serve our diverse student body. Experience or interest in teaching and developing online courses is recommended, but not required.

 

Required Qualifications

The successful candidates will have (1) a PhD in Chinese or a related field earned by the appointment start date of August 1, 2021; (2) native or near native proficiency in Chinese; (3) an active research and publication agenda; and (4) documented evidence of successful instruction and teaching of Chinese, from introductory to advanced levels. An earned doctorate is required by the start of the appointment, and a background check must be completed prior to employment.

Finalists will be asked to submit original transcripts from their PhD-granting institution reflecting degree conferral date.

Applicants are encouraged to apply by March 8, 2021 for optimal consideration; however, the search will continue until the position is filled. Application review will begin on March 10, 2021. Virtual semi-finalist interviews are expected to be conducted last week of March 2021, with finalist interviews planned for the month of April 2021.
