Non-Tenure Track Assistant Professor of French & Second Language Acquisition

Position:  The Department of Classical and Modern Languages is seeking applicants for one non-tenure track faculty position to start August 2021. This position is a full-time, nine-month appointment with additional summer teaching responsibilities on a separate contract.  Academic rank will be commensurate with experience and credentials. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who aspire to a position at a public liberal arts and sciences institution where teaching high-ability undergraduates is the primary mission.

The successful candidate will provide classroom instruction in undergraduate and graduate French courses for Master of Arts in Education (MAE) students, majors, minors, and non-majors, and teach one undergraduate course per semester in Second Language Teaching.  There are also opportunities to participate in the rich interdisciplinary culture of the University.  The successful candidate will serve as the liaison between the French program and the Truman Education Department.

The position requires a PhD in French or a closely related field, together with expertise in second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy, completed by the August start date.  ABD will be considered.

Applicants will be evaluated on academic qualifications; teaching philosophy, experience, and background; commitment to student development in the liberal arts and sciences; demonstrated success in student-centered teaching of undergraduate French courses; evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills; and compatibility with the department’s needs.

Program:  The Department of Classical and Modern Languages, a unit of the School of Arts & Letters, has twenty-seven full-time faculty members—three in French—and approximately 150 undergraduate majors.  The departments offer BA degrees in Classics and Modern Language, with specializations in French, German, Russian, and Spanish.  The department also offers twelve minors, including French, French Minor in Translation and the French Minor for the Professions.  The French program sponsors an active chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society, and contributes to United Speakers, a student organization dedicated to providing service to area Congolese and Hispanic communities.

The University: Truman State University is home to a vibrant educational community. The approximately 5,200 students that make up its student body are well prepared for the academic rigors of a highly selective university. More than 20 percent engage in significant undergraduate research and creative projects. Most gain leadership experience, and nearly half go on to graduate school or professional education within a year of earning a degree.
