Assistant Professor of German

Hillsdale College seeks to fill a five-year Assistant Professor of German position, beginning August 2020, with the possibility of renewal. Candidates should have completed (or be near completion of) a PhD degree in German literature, demonstrate excellence in and dedication to teaching language and literature on all undergraduate levels of a traditional liberal arts school, possess native or near native command of German and English, and show evidence of scholarly potential.

Hillsdale College is a selective, independent, four-year liberal arts college.  Hillsdale has traditionally upheld two concepts: academic excellence and institutional independence.  Love for undergraduate teaching is a must, along with the desire to work within an uncommonly strong German Department in the heart of the Midwest.

Directions:  Applicants must send a letter of application that presents evidence of strong undergraduate teaching skills and an active research agenda.  Applicants must also include two separate documents: a) a statement of teaching philosophy and professional goals; and b) a detailed response to the College’s Mission Statement (see www.hillsdale.edu/about/mission/) that includes a discussion of the candidate’s ability to teach in the light of its commitments.  The application must also include a curriculum vitae, three up-to-date letters of recommendation, and transcripts. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Deadlines:  All materials must be received by November 22, 2019, and addressed to Dr. Fred Yaniga, Chair, Department of German, Hillsdale College, 33 East College Street, Hillsdale, MI 49242.  Applications will be reviewed immediately, and invitations for MLA interviews (preferred) and possible Skype interviews will be sent by December 20th.  Formal campus visits for finalists will follow in January and February, 2020.
