Assistant Professor, Modern Languages

Responsibilities:

The University of Akron, Department of Modern Languages invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall Semester of 2021. The department seeks candidates that have demonstrated excellence in teaching and the ability to teach a wide range of courses in culture and language at the undergraduate level. The faculty member will be involved in all aspects of the academic college life including teaching, service and research. Teaching responsibilities will include: teaching beginning, intermediate and advanced level Spanish courses with an 18-24 annual credit hour load (generally 3/3 course load), using both face to face and synchronous and asynchronous online delivery; and developing Spanish for Specific Purposes tracks and community-based participatory initiatives. Service responsibilities will include: coordinating first year introductory Spanish language classes (Spanish 101-102); serving as advisor to Spanish minors and majors; and service at the program, department, college, and university levels.

 

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Spanish; native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English; college teaching experience both in traditional classrooms and online teaching format with experience / expertise in the communicative student-centered approach; proven record of teaching excellence at all levels; evidence of or potential for excellence in research / scholarship in the candidate’s area of specialization; proven record of excellence in teaching courses in Spanish for the Specific Purposes and / or in the development of community-based participatory initiatives with local Hispanic / Latinx communities; and demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, evaluate and recruit students.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in participating in or leading a Study Abroad program; certification in Oral Proficiency Interviewing (OPI); experience in grant writing and / or interest in directing Summer Study Abroad; and knowledge of curriculum development and program evaluation.
