Faculty Position in Creative Writing /English for Fall 2021

Position:  The Department of English and Linguistics is seeking applicants for one non-tenure, renewable full-time faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and English with expertise in African American literature (and/or other literatures of American minorities) and experience mentoring underrepresented students, to start August 2021.  This position is a full-time appointment on a nine-month contract.  There are also summer teaching possibilities.  This is an ideal opportunity for a creative writer (prose preferred) who aspires to a position at a public liberal arts and sciences institution where teaching high-ability undergraduates is the primary mission.

               

The successful candidate will provide classroom instruction in creative writing and literature, and participate in the advising and mentoring of undergraduate students. There are also opportunities to participate in the rich interdisciplinary culture of the University. 

               

The position requires at least an MFA in creative writing (PhD in English and/or Creative Writing preferred), completed by the August start date, with expertise in African American literature and/or literature of other American minorities, and evidence of effective teaching of both creative writing and literature. Additional expertise in Film Studies is desirable, but not required for consideration.

               

Applicants will be evaluated on demonstrated success in inclusive student-centered teaching of undergraduate creative writing and literature courses; teaching philosophy, experience, and background; academic qualifications; publications; commitment to student development in the liberal arts and sciences; evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills; and compatibility with the department’s needs.

 

Program:  The Department of English & Linguistics offers a BFA in creative writing, as well as a creative writing minor, a BA and minor in English, and a BS in linguistics. Depending on their area of specialization and research interests, faculty may also teach courses for the graduate programs (MA in English; MAE in Secondary English); for interdisciplinary programs such as Film Studies, Women’s & Gender Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, Cognitive Science, Children’s Studies, Disability Studies, and more; and/or seminars for the general education program.
