Senior Instructional Professor (Open Rank) and Co-Director, French Language Program

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) in French. This is a full-time position, benefits-eligible with a three-year renewable term, to start on September 1, 2021.

The Senior Instructional Professor will serve as Co-Director of the French Language Program, and will be share responsibility for managing all aspects of the French Language Program in the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures. The person selected will also teach in the French Language Program. The regular annual teaching load for senior instructional professors is six language courses in French. While serving as Language Program Co-Director this will be a reduced load of at least four courses/sections per year. Romance Languages Program Directors take turns teaching the Departmental pedagogy course.

Required are a Superior-level proficiency in French as defined by the ACTFL, an advanced degree in French or a related discipline, and extensive teaching experience at the college or postsecondary level, along with evidence of pedagogical excellence as demonstrated by course evaluations or other forms of assessment. Specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy and/or assessment is highly desirable. Experience developing and teaching language courses, and in curricular implementation is required. Applicants need to demonstrate the ability to design and articulate curricula across multiple sections, levels, and instructional platforms, and to work effectively with faculty members.

The Senior Instructional Professor will supervise full- and part-time instructional professors and lecturers, including those who are represented by the Service Employees International Union, with responsibility for directing, reviewing and evaluating their work, and, if necessary, for undertaking corrective action. In addition to the evaluation of teaching staff in the French language program, mandated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Program Co-Director may be called upon to perform evaluation duties for teaching staff in other departments.

The Program Co-Director will share responsibility for managing all pedagogical, administrative, and financial aspects of the French language program. In this capacity, the Program Co-Director will provide pedagogical vision, oversight, and direction for the language program as a whole. This includes course content and structure, schedules and staffing, the instructional budget, searches and recommendations for appointments, exchange personnel, mentorship, assessments, program expansion and improvement, the organization of cultural and outreach activities, and regular communication with relevant faculty and staff across the University. The expansion of the UChicago Paris Center may require increased coordination with language programs and instructors there. The non-course responsibilities require effort beyond the nine months of the academic year, including summer session involvement, upcoming academic year planning and materials, and staffing.
