The Department of English in the School of Arts and Sciences at Brandeis University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African American Literature beginning Fall 2020. Though candidates with expertise in gender, sexuality, or digital and media studies are encouraged to apply, we are interested in candidates of any period or sub-field who specialize in African American Literature. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellence as a scholar and teacher, and will have the PhD by September 2020. While this search originates in the English Department, the successful candidate will have an affiliation with the Department of African and African American Studies. We plan to interview candidates via Zoom in late November or December 2019. This position is subject to budget approval.  Please send a cover letter, c.v., and three letters of recommendation to Faith Smith, Chair of the Search Committee, Department of English, through Interfolio. First consideration will be given to completed applications received by November 1, 2019. (Please note that in the second round of the application process we will ask selected applicants for two writing samples.) An equal opportunity employer, Brandeis University is committed to building a culturally diverse and inclusive intellectual community, and strongly encourages applications from candidates with a variety of backgrounds, including those that have been underrepresented in higher education. As part of your cover letter please let us know how your present or future commitments to departmental and institutional equity, diversity and inclusion, are reflected in your creative and intellectual endeavors, your teaching, or your service.
