Assistant Professor in German Studies

The Department of German Studies seeks a tenure-line assistant professor, with a specialty in German literature and culture from 1890-1949, to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses at all levels. Preference will be given to applicants who complement our offerings in German as well as other departments and programs on campus, and whose research and teaching interests align with one or more of the following areas: theatre history, performance studies, and drama pedagogy; visual culture (film and photography); legacies of fascism, nationalism, and memory discourses; nature and eco-humanities; and literary historiography.

The University of Puget Sound is a 2,400 student liberal arts university with class sizes ranging between 15-30 students and a standard teaching load of 3 courses each semester.  Other duties include student advising, participation in departmental and university governance, and continuation of professional development in the faculty member's area of expertise.

Appointment: Full-time tenure-line Assistant Professor position; begins Fall, 2020.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in German Studies preferred; ABD considered; native or near-native proficiency in both German and English is required; dedication to a liberal arts college model and mission; record of excellence in undergraduate teaching at many levels; successful experience designing new courses; familiarity with or training in current international language assessments and standards (OPI certified examiner desirable); clear and on-going research agenda; participation in developing and leading summer faculty-led study abroad programs; history of organizing co-curricular programs, events, and community outreach activities.

Teaching includes language courses in the second-year sequence, literature and culture courses taught in German and English, as well as occasional offerings in the university’s Core curriculum.
