The Department of English at Simon Fraser University invites applications for an entry-level, full-time, continuing teaching faculty position at the rank of Lecturer beginning as early as July 15, 2021. Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in English completed by or shortly after the appointment start date, with a preference for a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric or a related field.

We invite applicants with a background in Writing Studies and interests that might include, but are not limited to: language standardization and exclusion, linguistic diversity, post-colonial and world Englishes, language ideologies in the writing classroom, minority rhetorics and literacy practices, Indigenous perspectives on rhetoric, and linguistic racism. Candidates with demonstrable interests in the relationships among language and identity, rhetoric and race, writing and intersectionality, and/or pedagogy and decolonization are strongly urged to apply. Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: professional writing, technology and writing, applied linguistics, rhetorical theory, second language writing.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach “Writing to Persuade” (English 199), the Department’s introduction to reading and writing from a rhetorical perspective. In addition to English 199, the candidate will develop and teach lower- and upper-division undergraduate courses. They will bring expertise in innovative approaches to teaching both in-person and online that support and enhance student learning and success. Those courses may cover a broad range of topics commensurate with the candidate’s particular area(s) of focus.

 

The candidate will join a department committed to a vibrant culture of research and teaching. The SFU English department boasts 26 accomplished faculty, over 500 undergraduate majors and minors, and over 60 M.A. and Ph.D. students working in all areas of English studies, with notable strengths in print culture; contemporary Canadian, Indigenous, and diasporic literatures; creative writing; and the digital humanities. We offer classes on three campuses in the metropolitan Vancouver area, as well as comprehensive distance education courses, joint majors, and opportunities for cooperative education.
