Assistant Professor of German

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN) invites applications for a full-time position in German at the rank of Assistant Professor, set to begin in August 2021. This is a three-year non-tenurable contract with the possibility of renewal pending departmental need and satisfactory performance. The successful candidate will have a record of teaching excellence in German at the college/university level, as well as a demonstrated commitment to program-building, advocacy, and extracurricular programming. Candidate must also be versed in literacy-based instructional methods and ready to be part of a team that embraces this approach in the context of a recently reformed German Studies curriculum. Area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in 20th and 21st-century culture and literature and a demonstrated commitment to diverse, decolonized representation of the German-speaking world. Native or near-native proficiency in German, Ph.D. in hand by the date of employment, and a strong understanding of and interest in working in an undergraduate-focused, liberal arts environment are all required. The teaching load for this position is 3-3. The option exists for the new hire to apply for directorship of Rhodes College Language Learning Center for additional compensation, but this is not a requirement of the job.
