Director, Expository Writing Program

Johns Hopkins University seeks to hire the Director of its Expository Writing Program, a newly free-standing entity within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The new Director will have the opportunity to engage in transformative program building, the hiring of additional teaching faculty, and the introduction of a new campus-wide writing requirement. The Director will play a major role in defining the nature of the new requirement, as well as disseminating it through the university. The appointment will be made at the rank of Teaching Professor, the highest rank among teaching faculty. In its current configuration, the Expository Writing Program already offers an established, highly effective array of courses in small seminars, designed to instill the art of persuasive scholarly argument. The pedagogy is first-rate and the faculty includes a stable, senior team of devoted and skilled lecturers of various disciplinary backgrounds, along with advanced graduate students and post-doctoral teaching fellows.

We seek a creative, collaborative Director who will extend the program's reach across all departments and disciplines, placing writing at the heart of undergraduate learning at an R1 university.

Serious candidates for the position should be:

*An accomplished scholar with Ph.D. or M.F.A. in a relevant field

*Experienced in managing a large program and training teachers

*Committed to writing and to the teaching of writing

*a leader with a well-articulated and compelling vision of the role of writing in various disciplines, and for various and diverse populations
