Assistant Professor of English


The College of Arts & Sciences seeks a full-time Assistant Professor, tenure track, to begin Fall 2021, whose specializations span diverse areas of British and/or World Literature, and who will complement existing strengths in English and interests across the university.
Housed within the interdisciplinary Department of the Humanities, Alvernia’s English Program offers a BA and minor and serves the University by offering distribution requirements in its general-education program. The successful candidate will be committed to the mission of the University and to developing and growing the English program. A passion for undergraduate teaching is essential, as is a commitment to inclusivity and working with diverse populations. The ideal candidate will be flexible and creative, with a broad range of academic interests and a devotion to the liberal arts.


Successful candidate will possess a PhD in English and an ability to teach courses in British Literature and Poetry, World Literature, and Literary Theory. ABDs with confirmed completion dates will be considered.


The ideal candidate will have evidence of excellence in student-centered teaching and engagement in high-impact practices such as service-learning and experiential learning with the use of innovative pedagogy. Candidates must have the ability to connect literature to diverse student populations and have the willingness to teach the university’s first year seminar and introductory level composition and research. Active participation in faculty governance and the life of the department is required.


Required Qualifications: Primary responsibilities include teaching literature for majors and non-majors, the universities first-year seminar and introductory Composition and Research course and supporting renewed emphasis on undergraduate and graduate level writing across the university. The promise of excellence in teaching and scholarship is required, as are superior communication skills. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 4-4. Service to the department and university is expected for tenure and promotion.
