Visiting Assistant Professor of German

Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full time one-year position (with possibility of renewal for up to three years) of Visiting Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Modern Languages to begin September 1, 2021.

Institution Information: Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830, is a selective, primarily residential liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1500 students located in the northern suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, 90 miles south of Washington, DC and 15 miles north of Richmond. The Department of Modern Languages and the German program within it strives to develop the mind and characters of students as future global citizens and welcomes candidates with interdisciplinary interests, including, but not limited to: Holocaust Studies, race and ethnicity, transculturalism, gender and sexuality, environmental justice and climate change, and global health.

Major/Essential Functions: Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship, and serve the college and department. Our department is particularly interested in applicants who can and will advance the College's goals for diversity, equity and inclusion and contribute to a critical, socially engaged, interdisciplinary German Studies program. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in German and on German culture at all levels of the undergraduate German program; contribute to interdisciplinary programs, including Foreign Language in English Translation courses; support program-related co-curricular activities; participate in the curricular and administrative work of the German program.                                 

Minimum Qualifications:

•           PhD in German Studies (or a related field); degree must be in hand by August 1, 2021;

•           Demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate teaching;

•           Native or near-native proficiency in German and English;

•           Evidence of commitment to undergraduate teaching; and

•           Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Preferred Qualifications:

•           2+ years of teaching experience at the college level demonstrating a strong commitment to curricular development, inclusive pedagogies, and the incorporation of innovative and accessible language-learning technologies.

•           Emerging or demonstrated research agenda and scholarly contributions.
