Coordinator of the Basic Language Sequence and Language Resource Center

The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures (WLLC) at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for an on-going, ten-month, non-tenure track position to begin August 1, 2021.

Illinois Wesleyan is a highly-selective, undergraduate, liberal arts university of approximately 1600 students. Through innovative and substantive pedagogies, the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures seeks to promote communicative and cultural competency and to cultivate a life-long appreciation and spirit of inquiry for languages and the cultures they reflect. We believe that all students can learn a new language and that a global mind-set is a necessity and an asset in today’s democratic society. Courses in WLLC intrinsically promote issues of diversity and underscore themes of social justice. Faculty members are committed to providing experiential opportunities that serve as a bridge to local, regional and international concerns. Interdisciplinary approaches modeled in the classroom help students develop a comprehensive world view and acquire both knowledge and empathy toward others.

Our primary focus is on the students, and the primary responsibilities of this position are to:

  • teach five courses per year in the Spanish beginning and intermediate classes;

  • coordinate the basic sequence classes for Spanish, French and Italian;

  • manage the Language Resource Center (LRC); and

  • supervise the language lab assistants (tutors) in all languages (currently Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese).

This position reports to the chair of WLLC.

Applicants should offer evidence of an excellent teaching record; online teaching and learning experience; familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) platforms; collaboration with faculty in integrating technology into second language instruction; and a strong interest in current trends in second language acquisition. A commitment to IWU’s institutional values regarding diversity and inclusion is also important. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English is required; knowledge of another language is desirable. Applicants must have a Master's degree in Spanish or related fields by August 2021.

Illinois Wesleyan University prides itself on sustaining a strong commitment to excellence in teaching as well as providing a nurturing and collaborative work environment. IWU is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce, and the department is committed to supporting a culturally and academically diverse professoriate; we encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups.
