Continuing Lecturer and Assistant Director of Introductory Composition

Continuing Lecturer and Assistant Director of Introductory Composition

Department of English, Purdue University, West Lafayette

The Department of English at Purdue University is seeking a full-time Continuing Lecturer who can mentor first-time teachers of composition and teach mainstream versions of English 106 (Composition) and English 108 (Accelerated Composition). Teaching advanced courses in writing may also be possible, depending on the lecturer’s qualifications and experience.

Mentoring new instructors will be the core of this position, at least initially. While the standard teaching load is 20-24 credit hours per year (usually 3/3), the teaching load will be reduced to 2/2 (4 courses per year) for the first year and for subsequent years for which mentoring is needed. This position requires some summer work, to be paid in addition to the academic year salary, that involves mentoring new instructors and co-teaching a seven-day orientation before the Fall semester. Responsibilities during the academic year also include holding three office hours per week for teaching assistants and undergraduate students and attending weekly staff meetings. All instructors in the program need to develop appropriate syllabi and policies within the guidelines provided by the program. All courses will need to be offered in person.

This is a Continuing Lecturer position, which means it will be reappointed annually as long as performance is meeting expectations and the position is needed. Salary is $50,000 for the academic year. This is a full-time academic year (9 month) position that includes benefits. You can contact Professor Richard Johnson-Sheehan, Director of Introductory Composition at Purdue, by email at rjohnso@purdue.edu if you have questions. For more information about our courses and program, please see https://cla.purdue.edu/academic/english/icap/
