Position Summary:

The Interim Director directs student programming and coordinates day-to-day operations in the CWLT. The Interim Director supports student academic achievement at the University of Puget Sound by supervising CWLT staff members, directing the university's Writing Advisor programming; coordinating academic counseling for students at risk; offering faculty development support related to writing instruction; and working with other staff members in the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching to assess and further develop programming.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead in the hiring, training, and mentoring of Peer Writing Advisors, Subject Tutors, and Peer Academic Consultants.
  • Lead bimonthly student staff meetings and/or ongoing peer staff education.
  • Teach CWLT 300: Research on Writing and Learning, the course for new Subject Tutors and Writing Advisors, as well as a section open to disciplinary tutors across campus.
  • Coordinate with the faculty development center to offer periodic programming and consultation related to writing pedagogy
  • Coordinate services for students seeking assistance with time management, test-taking strategies, writing, and other academic performance issues, through assessing student needs and referring to appropriate student, staff, or self-directed resources.
  • Coordinate administrative support for new student academic orientation and one-to-one writing appointments during the summer.
  • Serve on university committees, as needed (including Academic Leadership Team, LEAD, pre-Student Alert Group).
  • Write CWLT annual report and annual diversity report.


Supervisory Responsibilities

 

 

  • Supervise the CWLT Office Manager and Peer Tutor Coordinator staff positions.
  • Supervise CWLT Writing Advisors and Peer Academic Consultants.


Budget Responsibilities

 

 

  • Manage the CWLT operating budget.


Qualifications:

 

 

  • Ph.D. degree preferred (in Composition and Rhetoric, Education, or a related field); Master's degree acceptable.
  • Professional engagement and experience with writing center work and with teaching writing at the college level.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population including multilingual students and students with disabilities.
  • Experience teaching with educational technology such as Canvas or other learning management system, Google Workspace, and Zoom.
  • Ability to set goals and work independently while contributing to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Knowledge of assessment practices preferred.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.

About the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching: The CWLT is a thriving center for peer learning that offers undergraduate peer tutoring in writing across the curriculum, as well as subject tutoring, academic consulting, and multilingual language partners. With support from faculty mentors, students from our center regularly present at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing, which we hosted in 2016, and our students have presented at the European Writing Centers Association Conference and the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing. Sound Writing is the award-winning, open-source writing handbook authored by students from our Center in collaboration with faculty mentors. The CWLT was founded in 1984 and was featured in the landmark 1993 Writing Centers in Context.
