Located 36 miles east of Atlanta on Emory’s original campus Oxford, Georgia, Oxford College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in English, to begin August 1, 2021. This is a one-year position with a 3-3 load that may be renewable for up to three years, based on strong teaching evaluations, need, and available funding. Courses are anticipated to be in person.

Position responsibilities include teaching six writing courses per year, primarily in first-year composition (ENG 185/6: “Writing & Inquiry in the Liberal Arts”—description below). We especially seek candidates with experience teaching first-year writing using a rhetorical and writing in the disciplines (WID) approach. We value pedagogies intentionally designed to support a diverse student population and candidates interested in contributing to ongoing faculty conversations related to inclusive teaching. Qualified and interested candidates may teach one or more sheltered sections of first-year writing for multilingual students (ENG 186).



  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year writing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, Writing Studies, or related field by August 1, 2021 (also considered: A terminal degree in English or related field with significant pedagogical training and teaching experience in composition).


  • Experience teaching first-year writing using a writing in the disciplines (WID) approach.
  • Experience using inquiry-based approaches to teaching rhetoric and writing.
  • Commitment to the liberal arts.
  • Active professional development in Rhetoric, Composition, Writing Studies.
  • Demonstrated excellence and/or expertise in teaching first-year writing to multilingual, international, multiple-English, and non-heritage English writers.

Course Description

ENG 185/6: “Writing & Inquiry in the Liberal Arts” introduces students to the range of writing and inquiry they will encounter as part of their liberal arts education, engaging them with the role of writing in inquiry. It is designed to introduce students to rhetorical principles for writing, including disciplinarity as an important element of academic rhetorical situations and exposing them to writing across a range of disciplines and purposes. Using inquiry-based approaches, the course introduces students how to ask good questions about new writing situations and unfamiliar genres as well as strategies and tools for developing, revising, and editing their writing. The course introduces students to resources and strategies for college-level library research and research-based writing.
