Executive Director

Executive Director, American Trust for the British Library

Background:

The governing bodies of the American Trust for the British Library are seeking an advanced-degree holder in the humanities, preferably with public humanities experience, to succeed the retiring Executive Director. This position would enable a recent PhD or ABD with an interest in creating community partnerships to get a start in the world of humanities nonprofit work. The ATBL was established as a result of the blitz’s damage of the British Library’s collections during World War ll, and its ongoing fundraising and scholarship mission is to connect the US book and library community to the British Library. The ATBL offers lecture series and other fundraising events with transatlantic content; encourages transatlantic scholarship, understanding, and community building; provides the British Library with annual grants ; and makes possible a series of interdisciplinary fellowships in partnership with US educational institutions. This new fellowship program operates in partnership with Harvard University, The Library Company of Philadelphia, and Johns Hopkins University, and there is a plan in place to expand it in a deliberate way, on a planned timeline, with special attention to expanding the diversity of the partner institutions.

Professional Requirements:

In addition to supporting the current fundraising activities, the individual will work with counterparts at the British Library and with the ATBL Chairman, President, Treasurer, Trustees, Chairman’s Council, Advisory Council, and Executive Committee.  The Executive Director should have skills in information management and digital literacies and will have the support of the ATBL’s internal comptroller and external auditor in the preparation of financial documents. Reporting to the Executive Director will be an Administrative Assistant who will help with the annually updated policies and procedures manual and whose other key areas of responsibility will include communications technology, website management, archival and oral histories, and membership and donor tracking. When appropriate, the Executive Director will also be able to call upon an Events Consultant who is very familiar with the mission and operations of the British Library and upon the support of the executive director of the Modern Language Association.

Compensation will be competitive at the entry level for a recent PhD.

A graduate degree in the humanities complemented by some business knowledge would be a plus. The position will include opportunities for professional development in financial management and fundraising. Review of applications will begin immediately. Send CV and cover letter, addressed to ATBL Search Committee, to execdirector@mla.org.
