The Department of English and Creative Writing at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of English.  This is a one-year, full-time, visiting faculty position beginning July 2021 with the possibility of renewal for one year.

A generalist is sought with strength in early American literature, 17th- and 18th-century transatlantic literature, and LGBTQIA+ literature.  The position carries a teaching load of six courses per year.  Other duties include advising students, supervising graduate and undergraduate theses, and participating in department and university service.

The ideal candidate will be a strong teacher and scholar who can offer courses at all levels, including writing-intensive courses in a variety of literary periods.  Candidates are desired whose courses can contribute to the department’s concentration in multicultural literature, and they should include other areas of interest in their application.

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: Ph.D. in English in hand by July 1, 2021; evidence of scholarly promise; and an excellent record of teaching at the undergraduate level.  Applicants must also demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching in a single-sex, liberal arts institution.  Applications are sought from those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations, and share Hollins’ commitment to preparing students for leadership opportunities in a broadly diverse, global society.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; a separate statement of teaching philosophy; a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement that addresses how their teaching, writing, research, and/or service experience will enhance the institution’s efforts to support these values and an increasingly diverse student population; three letters of recommendation (one of which must focus specifically on the candidate’s teaching experience and abilities); and graduate school transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) to americanlit@hollins.edu.  Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled.  Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.

Hollins is an independent, liberal arts university offering undergraduate education for women and selected graduate programs for men and women.  Founded in 1842 as Virginia’s oldest chartered women’s college, Hollins provides abundant opportunities to students for research, study abroad, and leadership training, and provides access to real-world experience through internships around the globe supported by an extensive alumnae/i network.

Hollins is an equal opportunity employer, and is strongly committed to promoting diversity and inclusiveness at every level of the university.  Persons of all genders, persons with disabilities, and persons of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
