Assistant Professor (tenure track): History of the English Language

The Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for an appointment in the field of the History of the English Language with a focus on World/Global Englishes.

We seek to attract candidates that can engage with the theories and methodologies currently informing the study of English Historical Linguistics (any area, any period) but that can also engage with the global context in which the language is (and has been) spoken. The successful candidate will be expected to teach first- and second-year introductions to English language study, senior undergraduate and graduate courses on the history of English and contemporary English linguistics as well as specialised seminars and courses in world/global Englishes. The appointment will be at the level of assistant professor (tenure-track) with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

The Department of English Language and Literatures at UBC is unique in Canada in its ability to provide instruction and supervision in the history of the English language, cognitive linguistics, contemporary linguistic analysis, lexicography and the history and theory of rhetoric. The department also has a newly revised curriculum with courses on trans-national networks, diaspora and migration studies, Indigenous studies, critical race studies, anti/de/post-colonial studies, global south connections, world literatures, environmental studies and gender studies, all in conjunction with a robust historical curriculum. This appointment may also contribute to a number of curricular and research initiatives in the Faculty of Arts, including the Language Sciences Initiative, the UBC Center for Migration Studies, Medieval Studies, the Center for Gender, Race and Social Justice, and Critical Indigenous Studies.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person (the latter understood broadly in its global context). Applicants are asked to include, as part of their application materials, a separate statement describing past experience that promotes diversity and inclusion, broadly understood and/or plans to make future contributions to more inclusive representation of racialized minorities in the applicant’s core discipline(s), in the academy more broadly, and/or affiliate institution(s).

Applicants must have a PhD or provide solid indication of imminent completion. Applicants should have publications and experience teaching at the post-secondary level; they are expected to provide strong evidence of active and excellent research, and demonstrate a record of, or potential for, high quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels and introductory courses as well as specialist area courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research leading to publication, effective teaching, graduate supervision, and service.
