Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Professor of Chinese

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Wellesley College announces a search for a tenure-track assistant professor position in premodern Chinese language and literature. Research field is open but excludes candidates in modern and contemporary literature and film.  Desirable sub-fields include but are not limited to classical poetry of Tang and Song, classical theater, classical fiction, and vernacular fiction of Ming and Qing.  History of the book and gender are other welcome areas of research specialization. The successful candidate is expected to cover a course in language, as well as courses on premodern Chinese literature and culture.  In addition, they should be able to teach an introductory course that covers China, Japan, and Korea. Candidates who can cross-list courses in Women and Gender Studies, Comparative Literary Studies, Theatre Studies, or another humanities department will receive priority. We seek candidates with proven teaching skills, substantial research promise, and a strong interest in designing undergraduate courses for a thriving program that includes Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and cultures.  The teaching load is four courses per year.  PhD preferred (ABD considered).
