Assistant Professor in Asian American and/or Asian Diaspora Studies

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University seeks to fill a tenure track, Assistant Professor position with a focus on Asian American and/or Asian Diaspora Studies. Successful candidates for this position will present strong evidence of excellence in research and teaching, and have the Ph.D. in hand by the start date. We seek candidates with scholarly and teaching expertise in the history of race, ethnicity, and inequality in the United States, and demonstrated interest in one or more of the following: migration; film, literature, or other cultural circulation and representation; queer theory; disability studies; urbanisms; labor; social movements; citizenship and dissent; and/or American empire and militarism in Asia. Candidates with community-oriented research, teaching, and engagement in or near New York City are especially encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will also help build a new curricular focus on Critical Race Studies. The position will commence on September 1, 2022.  

Full time faculty teach four courses per year (two in the Fall and two in the Spring) and serve as an adviser for 20-25 students. The ideal candidate will also have active interest in participation in the co-curricular activities of the School, including community-oriented civic engagement. 

Founded in 1972, Gallatin is a liberal arts college of 1,600 undergraduate students and 150 masters students located within the major research university of NYU. Its innovative B.A. and M.A. programs in individualized study encourage students to develop an integrated, interdisciplinary program of study that combines courses taken in the various schools of NYU with independent studies, internships, and Gallatin’s own interdisciplinary seminars, writing courses and arts workshops. The School emphasizes excellent teaching, top level faculty research, intensive student advising and mentoring, and a unique combination of program flexibility and academic rigor.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment; demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college or university level; and a strong record of research and writing.
