Professor of Chinese Language and Culture

Soka University of America (SUA) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level in Chinese Language and Culture to begin August 1, 2022. 

The standard full-time teaching load at SUA is five courses per academic year: two courses each semester and one course in SUA’s cross-disciplinary General Education curriculum (for course descriptions see the SUA catalog).

SUA offers a challenging program in Liberal Arts with a strong emphasis on international and intercultural exposure. All undergraduates must complete four semesters of foreign (non-English) language coursework at SUA, and study abroad for one semester during their junior year. The university aims to foster rewarding intellectual relationships among faculty, and between faculty and students through collaboration and mentoring. An appreciation of the centrality of peace, global citizenship, freedom, and human rights is the founding impetus for the University and its Mission.

Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and have a willingness to facilitate the university’s mission to develop global citizens.

Qualifications: PhD in Chinese language or related area; native or near-native proficiency in both Chinese and English; active research, scholarship, and publication agenda; ability to teach Chinese as a foreign language and culture at all levels and to develop courses in the candidate’s area of expertise; ability and willingness to contribute to SUA’s General Education program. This position bears responsibility for supervising all of the Chinese courses within the Language and Culture Program.
