Contemporary African American Literature and Culture

The Department of English at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Contemporary African American Literature and Culture. We welcome candidates with strong scholarly potential whose methods embrace interdisciplinary and/or multi-medium approaches. We also welcome candidates whose work places African American literature and culture in transnational or comparative contexts. We are particularly interested in scholars whose research program focuses on one or more of the following areas: contemporary Black Popular Cultures, Black Atlantic or African diasporic studies, Afro-futurism or speculative fiction, film studies, visual and material cultures, digital humanities, science and technology studies, sound studies, Black Feminisms, and gender and sexuality studies.

The Department of English seeks candidates who can contribute to Binghamton University’s academic mission as a public institution, especially through commitment to diversity of perspective, intercultural understanding, and engagement with local resources and communities. Candidates working across disciplines are encouraged to apply. The Department’s standard 2-2 teaching load includes instruction in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculums. The University expects faculty members to maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication and to contribute service to the department, university, and profession.  Candidates will be expected to have completed a PhD degree in English or a related field by June 2022. 

This hire will be part of the Harpur College of Arts & Sciences’ new multi-year cluster hire in the thematic area “Critical Studies in Race and Inequality.” Harpur seeks to build a network of scholars who are committed to conducting research on race, racism, ethnicity, social justice, power, and structures of inequality in their diverse fields of specialization. The College is particularly interested in appointing faculty members who are deeply connected to and integrated into the communities that they study, as a means to build on the strong tradition of engaged scholarship at Binghamton University.
