Assistant Professor of German

Assistant Professor of German Studies, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota

The Department of German, Nordic, Slavic and Dutch (GNSD) in the College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota, invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in German Studies, beginning August 29, 2022.

We are seeking innovative scholars who study German literature, culture, or media from a broad perspective (e.g., intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural history; the transnational and comparative study of literature, culture, or media; multicultural Europe; from the premodern to the contemporary period) with preferred research and teaching in film and media studies; race and migration; or environmental studies. Applicants must demonstrate a facility with a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches; talent for curricular and programmatic innovation; and the intellectual curiosity to participate in scholarly conversations and practices across the liberal arts. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a rigorous program of research, be committed to effective teaching of a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to departmental and professional service appropriate to the rank of the appointment.

Required Qualifications

Native or near-native fluency in German and English, evidence of excellent college/university-level teaching, and commitment to program building. All requirements for the Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in German Studies or a related field must be completed by August 29, 2022. 

Candidates will be evaluated according to the overall quality of their academic preparation and research, evidence of scholarly promise, teaching experience, and the strength of recommendations.
