The Department of Italian at Vassar College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Italian beginning Fall 2022.

Position Description
We are seeking a specialist in Medieval or Renaissance Italian literature and culture with a secondary focus in Mediterranean, migration, gender, science and information, environmental studies or other multidisciplinary intersections. The successful candidate will be expected to offer courses on seminal primary texts, including Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, in Italian or English, to students of all undergraduate levels. The candidate should have experience putting these and other foundational texts in dialogue with their secondary interests, to showcase compelling interdisciplinary approaches to traditional fields of study. In addition to offering literature and cultural studies courses and seminars, the candidate will supervise senior projects, collaborate on extracurricular activities, and be an active, teaching member of a lively language pedagogy program. The candidate will contribute to advising and directing the study abroad program.

Teaching load in the first year is four courses. In ensuing years, it will be five courses or four plus an “Intensive,” a course where students work with faculty on projects, theses, independent studies, or other forms of closely-mentored student learning.

How to Apply

Required qualifications include:
● Ph.D. in Italian Studies, Comparative Literature, or related discipline in hand by June 2022;
● Expertise in Medieval or Renaissance Italian literature and culture;
● Experience teaching Italian language at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;
● Excellence in undergraduate teaching;
● Evidence, or clear promise, of scholarship;
● Native or near-native fluency in Italian and English.

Preferred qualifications include:
● Interdisciplinary secondary focus, as indicated in the position description;
● Experience teaching undergraduate courses in the United States;
● Experience or interest in study abroad.
