Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies

The Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, beginning in fall 2022. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. PhD in Contemporary Japanese Literary and Cultural studies or relevant field is required, ABD considered. Of particular interest are candidates whose research focuses on contemporary Japanese popular culture; film and media studies; translation studies; and/or race, ethnicity or gender studies. Demonstrated experience or interest in developing digital humanities research and teaching is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to bridge language and cultural studies, with secondary interests in applied or anthropological linguistics, intercultural communication, or language socialization in Japan, is also desirable. The successful candidate will be able to teach Japanese language and culture at all levels, along with interdisciplinary courses in English. Teaching load is 2+2.

The successful candidate will benefit from a strong and growing support of interdisciplinary humanities research and teaching at Carnegie Mellon, including such initiatives as the Center for the Arts in Society, Humanities@CMU, and Askwith Kenner Global Languages and Cultures Room.

Qualifications

PhD in Japanese Literary and Cultural Studies or related field. ABD considered.
