Appointment Type: Full Time
Purpose of Position:
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish, effective August 2022. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates.
We are seeking teacher-scholars whose primary specialization is the literatures and cultures of medieval or early modern Spain. Applicants are required to possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish. Other desirable teaching interests include Spanish for the professions, digital humanities, or interdisciplinary teaching. The faculty member’s primary responsibilities will include teaching all levels of Spanish language and advanced courses for majors and minors, maintaining an active and productive research agenda, and engaging in service at the department and university levels. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3.
The Ph.D. in Spanish or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University is composed of a team of 21 teacher-scholars who are committed to undergraduate education and to professional growth. The department offers instruction in French, German, Spanish, ancient Greek, Latin, Italian, Arabic, and Chinese. Our programs include four majors, four interdisciplinary minors, and MAT degrees in Spanish and ESL. We are also strong supporters of study abroad: MCLL has sponsored numerous short-term study trips and, in conjunction with the Office of Study Abroad, advises students on longer-term language immersion opportunities. In addition to serving our majors and minors, MCLL faculty have the privilege of working with a significant portion of the student body through the second language literacy requirement in the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum. They publish on a diverse range of subjects and welcome the opportunity to mentor students on independent research projects.
