Position description

The Department of English at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track position in African-Canadian and/or African-American Literatures. We welcome candidates who specialize in Black diasporic, transnational, and global Black literatures, cultures, and media.  We likewise welcome applications from candidates across the full disciplinary range of theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches.

 

The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. This position is at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The appointment begins 1 August 2022. This position is part of a multi-year interdisciplinary initiative designed to strengthen and support research innovation and excellence in African and Black Studies at McGill, while simultaneously addressing the under-representation of Black faculty in the tenure stream, as laid out in the University Action Plans to Address Anti-Black Racism 2020-2025.

  

Job Duties

McGill University’s Department of English brings together three related areas of study--Literature, Cultural Studies, and Drama and Theatre--and promotes research and teaching across specialist boundaries. The successful candidate will develop a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in keeping with the Department’s interdisciplinary foci. The teaching assignment is 4 courses (12 credits) per academic year.

 

Qualifications and Education requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in hand or be very near completion. Knowledge of French and some teaching experience are assets for this position. Evidence of scholarly promise is a major consideration.
