Teaching Assistant Professor - English Composition/Associate Undergraduate Writing Coordinator

The Department of English at West Virginia University invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor starting July 15, 2022.  This is a 9-month, full-time position with full benefits. Teaching Assistant Professors at WVU are eligible for promotion; however, promotion to senior ranks is not required for institutional commitment and career stability in a teaching faculty appointment. There is no traditional research assignment. Instead, teaching faculty are expected to support curricular goals and assessment processes. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms.  

The successful candidate will contribute to our Undergraduate Writing Program and, as Associate Undergraduate Writing Coordinator, will assist the Coordinator with professional development, teaching observations, and support for our undergraduate writing instructors and students.

The Department of English has a faculty of 33 in creative writing, literature, sociolinguistics, and composition & rhetoric, and we offer a full range of academic programs (B.A., M.A., M.A. in Professional Writing and Editing, M.F.A., and Ph.D.).

The position requires a doctoral degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or a related field with evidence of extensive preparation in rhetoric and composition. The degree must be in hand by January 31, 2022.  Other requirements include experience teaching writing at the college level, demonstrated teaching excellence, familiarity with online teaching technologies, familiarity with inclusive pedagogy practices, familiarity with writing program administration, and excellent written and oral communication skills. The teaching assignment is four course equivalents each semester with one course reassignments each semester for administrative responsibilities, resulting in a 3–3 course load. Part-time summer administrative responsibilities are expected with additional compensation. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes that contribute to the Department’s undergraduate writing curriculum.
