The Program of East Asian Studies at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall 2022, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.
Oberlin’s Chinese curriculum, offering five levels of Chinese language, is lodged within the East Asian Studies Program, which includes Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies, and the disciplines of Anthropology, Art History, Cinema Studies, Religion, History, Environmental Studies, and Politics. Related courses in Ethnomusicology are also offered in the Conservatory.
The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) in the general area of Chinese language and culture, contributing 2-3 Chinese language courses at all levels per year and 2 content courses, to be taught in English, aimed at EAS majors and non-majors from across the College. We welcome specialists in any subfield of premodern/pre-1900 Chinese literature and culture.
In addition to excellence in teaching, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position. The successful candidate will participate actively in the life of the East Asian Studies Program and the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on College committees.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2022). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
