The Department of English at New York University seeks to appoint two tenure-track Assistant Professors in the field of African American or Black Diasporic Literature and Performance effective September 1st, 2022, pending administrative and budgetary approval. These positions are part of a multi-departmental cluster hire in Black Diaspora Literary Studies that includes the departments of English, Comparative Literature, Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures and French Literature, Thought and Culture. A primary aim of the cluster is to create a network for scholars working in these areas to collaborate across NYU. We seek emerging scholars of Black diasporic literature and culture of any period (or across periods). Applicants may specialize in one particular region or nation (e.g., U.S., Caribbean, Canada, Britain, Anglophone Africa) within a global framework, or work comparatively. While we are interested in considering scholars whose research complements existing departmental strengths in the study of literary history, poetics, and print culture, we are equally committed to expanding on those strengths to include, for instance, gender and sexuality studies, interdisciplinary or intermedial approaches to Black culture, and Black critical theory.

One of these two positions will focus exclusively in theater and performance studies. In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses related to their area of specialization, the successful candidate will also teach survey courses in theater and performance history, theory, and practice within the Program in Dramatic Literature, which offers both a major and minor.

The other position is open with respect to genre. In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses related to their area of specialization, the successful candidate will teach courses on literary history and literary analysis for the undergraduate major in English or in the College of Arts and Science Core Curriculum, and contribute to our regular course offerings in Black diasporic literature.

The successful candidates will demonstrate scholarly excellence and a commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching, and must have the PhD in hand by September 1, 2022. The search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates who will bring to their research and teaching the diverse perspectives that come from non-traditional educational backgrounds or an understanding of those under-represented in higher education.
