Job Title: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track)
The Cultural Studies program at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Justice and Cultural Studies. The Cultural Studies program focuses on media and popular cultures as well as theories of identity and power, with research and teaching strengths in critical media analysis, critical theory, decolonization, creative activism, feminist environmental humanities, and community engaged research/pedagogy. This new position is designed to enhance and expand upon the program’s strengths. We are particularly interested in candidates who specialize in environmental racism and who make use of anti-oppressive and intersectional frameworks. Research and teaching might focus on one or more of the following areas: transnational climate justice; landback movements and other Indigenous-led responses to environmental injustice; environmental justice from Black Studies perspectives; Black/POC-Indigenous solidarity in relation to environmental justice; climate change, migration and refugee studies; issues relating to colonialism and environment in the Global South; or other areas of study that examine the relation of racism and environmental issues. The position will be held in the Department of English and Cultural Studies, in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and will begin on July 1, 2022. The Appointment Committee will begin reviewing applications on Nov. 15, 2021.
Candidates must have a completed Ph.D., or equivalent, in Cultural Studies or a related field, an active scholarly profile, demonstrate high-quality experience in, or potential for, research and publication, as well as demonstrated excellence of or potential for, relevant teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates are invited to provide relevant context. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, teaching, graduate supervision, and service, and to engage with the interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching introductory Cultural Studies courses as well as developing and teaching new upper-level courses in Environmental Justice. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies offers both discipline-based and interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and graduate level across a wide range of subject areas in the humanities and fine arts. Faculty in Cultural Studies provide supervision and teaching in the English MA program as well as Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies (IGS) themes, including: Sustainability; Digital Arts and Humanities; Global Studies; and Community Engagement, Social Change, and Equity. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to Indigenous engagement. UBC’s Okanagan campus is located in the unceeded territories of the Syilx/Okanagan nation.
