Position Description

The Department of English and Comparative Literature at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position teaching Latinx/Chicanx Literature and/or Literature of the Americas with additional ability to serve students in a large department by teaching potential courses in creative writing (especially nonfiction), literary theory, comparative literature, environmental literature, general education, or e-literature/digital humanities courses.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a field relevant to Latinx or Chicanx literary studies and/or Literature of the Americas by time of appointment. 
  • Ability to teach literature courses such as Literature of the Americas (including Caribbean or Latin American), Latinx/Chicanx literature, Multiethnic Literature, Literature of the Borderlands, and/or Topics in Ethnic American Literature.
  • Possess a recent history of scholarly/creative publications that shows promise as a productive researcher in the field of specialty.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to contribute beyond specialty by teaching courses such as our transatlantic surveys or courses in creative writing, comparative literature, theory, research methods, close reading, digital humanities, literature of the environment, or general education courses such as First Year Writing.
