The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Japanese (specialization open: pedagogy, linguistics, applied linguistics, or literature). We are seeking candidates with a strong background in Japanese language pedagogy and a commitment to pursue a high-quality scholarly activity in their field of specialty. The successful candidate will be instrumental in helping to develop, implement and grow the new major concentration in Japanese. The position requires (1) teaching undergraduate Japanese language courses at all levels and a variety of upper-level courses, as well as introductory culture courses and advanced seminars in English as part of the Major in Foreign Languages; (2) conducting and publishing research; and (3) engaging in departmental, college and university service. Candidates who incorporate technology and innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching the language and culture of Japan will be strongly considered. There is the opportunity to lead summer study abroad programs.

The successful candidate must have native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English and must have a PhD in hand by the time of appointment (August 15, 2022), although ABDs may be considered at the time of offer.
