Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Francophone Studies

Georgetown University, Department of French & Francophone Studies. Tenure-line position for a specialist in Francophone Literatures and Cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa to begin August 1, 2022.  For the first year of this position, the successful candidate will also hold the title of Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellow, and will have no teaching and service responsibilities to allow a focus on research while receiving mentorship and support from two senior faculty members.  After the first fellowship year, the candidate will be expected to offer courses taught in French in the specific area of research expertise in addition to a variety of offerings in French at the lower- and mid-division levels, including language-learning and writing-intensive courses. Cross-listed courses and engagement with the African Studies Program in Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service will be strongly encouraged. Additional expertise in theater and performance studies and/or creative writing is also welcome, as is expertise in women’s and gender studies. The Georgetown University Department of French & Francophone Studies has a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research at all levels. Our overarching learning goal is to give students linguistic competency, cultural literacy, writing and research skills, and critical thinking abilities within a framework that encourages creativity. 

  

Qualifications: 

 

Ph.D. in hand by August 1, 2022. Near-native fluency in French and English. Demonstration of a commitment to academic excellence and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).  This commitment to DEI can be demonstrated in a number of ways, including through teaching and research on matters related to DEI or through service that has fostered DEI in a university community.

The Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellowship program

 

The Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellowship program is in its inaugural year at Georgetown University.  This program is designed to bring in a cohort of new faculty from a wide range of backgrounds who demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Provost’s Distinguished Fellows are on the tenure track and will be exempt from teaching and service duties in the first year of their appointments, and will devote their full-time effort to building their research program.  Fellows will be assigned senior faculty mentors by their home departments.
