University Background
The mission of California Lutheran University is to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and committed to service and justice. Founded in 1959 in beautiful Ventura County, the university has an enrollment of about 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students who come from across the nation and around the world from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures and faiths. As a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution, Cal Lutheran is looking for candidates with a dedication to and success in working in diverse communities. The university is committed to an inclusive learning and work environment that values individual differences and respects each person's dignity.

Basic Function
The English Department at California Lutheran University invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Literature: One position in U.S. Latina/o/x Literatures, and one in African American and Black Diaspora Literatures or related field.

One of these two positions (either one) will be combined with Fiction Writing. The Fiction writer will have their MFA; and candidate without Fiction writing will require a PhD (or ABD).

Interested candidates in either both positions should possess expertise in one or more of the following: Literature of the Americas, Indigenous Literatures, critical approaches to literature including critical race studies/theory, gender and sexuality studies, and/or post-colonial studies.

The ideal candidate for each position will possess experience working with students of different ethnic and racial backgrounds and educational attainment, including first-generation and/or immigrant students. The ideal candidate for each position will show evidence of ability to teach successfully, and show a strong record of creative and/or scholarly achievement or promise pertinent to the position.

We especially seek candidates who can demonstrate culturally-responsive and relevant pedagogy and principles, as well as a commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and equity in education through writing, teaching, and/or advocacy. Language proficiency in Spanish is beneficial.

Position duties will include teaching undergraduate courses in U.S. Latina/o/x Literatures or African American Literature, and first-year Critical Reading and Writing, as well as other courses in writing and literature as needed and available. The Fiction writer will also teach Creative Writing-Fiction courses, and will have the opportunity to provide leadership in the Department's creative writing initiatives on campus. Creative writing initiatives include shaping the new creative writing minor and our award-winning literary arts magazine Morning Glory, as well as connecting campus and community, such as through our Guest Writers Series, which brings local and regional writers to campus for readings and workshops.

Successful candidates will teach 12 units (3 courses) per semester, and participate in the regular functioning of the English Department. University service commitments and student mentoring/advising are expected of all faculty.

The candidates will join a devoted English Department of 10 full-time faculty and 10-12 part-time faculty who teach courses in writing and literature that serve the general education requirements for all traditional undergraduates as well as approximately 60-70 majors and minors. We offer a traditional literature major, a major with a writing concentration, and minors in creative writing and TESOL.
