Charles Crow Chair in Composition

Pending budgetary approval, we seek a distinguished tenured scholar at associate or full professor rank to fill the Charles Crow Chair in the University of Pittsburgh’s Composition Program in the Department of English. The chair was established to support a professor with a record of distinguished scholarship, a strong commitment to the teaching of composition, engagement with writing instruction, broadly defined, and recognition as one who contributes to the department's mission. We look for a colleague who is open to innovative writing, research, and pedagogy and to pushing the boundaries of the discipline and its relationships to other aspects of English and to the broader public—a colleague who can help mentor the up-and-coming junior faculty, attract and supervise graduate students, and share in the administration of the program and in the support of writing instruction across the university. We are particularly interested in candidates whose lived experiences would prove resourceful in mentoring students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.    

As a colleague, you would join a program that cultivates interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to the field of composition, with a strong commitment to its integration into English studies. Our major in Public and Professional Writing extends our commitment to writing across the university and in workplaces and the public. Colleagues have collaborated with researchers in science and engineering, have engaged in digital research and pedagogy, and have taken the lead in projects such as Pitt Prison Education Project (a pedagogical project bringing together Pitt undergrads with inmates), the Writing Studies Tree (an online, crowdsourced database of academic genealogies within writing studies), a new collaborative major with the School of Computing and Information called Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (DNID), and DBLAC (a digital network and learning community of Black graduate students in composition, literature, and literacies). Research interests include the shape and history of composition as a field, Black rhetoric and public writing, cultural and material rhetorics, translingualism and the global university, digital composing and pedagogy, and rhetorics of science and technology.

We seek colleagues who would find these commitments, interests, and affiliations congenial and would bring to the department research projects and pedagogical practices that will enrich and transform them. Applicants must hold a PhD and demonstrate a record of substantial publication with at least one monograph, evidence of excellent teaching and commitment to undergraduate courses, evidence of institutional and professional engagement, and evidence of how their research, teaching or service demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Salary for the position will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The chair comes with a generous research and programming fund. The position will begin fall semester of 2022.
